truly offers activities year-round. Guests staying with us can look

- And, a favorite, sitting on a deck or in front of a fireplace and doing

For those interested in playing golf there are three excellent public courses
in the area. The Links at Sierra Blanca was professionally designed as a
Scottish style course that is fun for both beginner and experienced golfers
alike. Cree Meadows Golf Course, a beautiful older course, has access to a
restaurant and lounge. The Inn of the Mountain Gods Golf Course is a
challenging course ranked as a top resort destination. The views from all
three of these courses are breathtaking.
Traveling to the Alto area to check
out
Rainmakers? We are only about 1.5 miles away
from this premier resort with a stunning championship
golf course recently opened. Stay
with us while you see your property!
Many visitors come from all around to ski at Ski Apache. Owned and
operated by the Mescalero Apache Tribe, Ski Apache has New Mexico's largest lift
capacity and is the largest ski area in the southern Rockies. Ski season
runs from Thanksgiving in November until Easter each year. Even in the
off-season visitors enjoy driving the 12 miles up to the ski area to take in the
fabulous views.
Ruidoso Downs Race Track boasts the richest Quarter Horse racing in the world
with the $1 Million All American Futurity. Racing begins in May and runs
through Labor Day weekend. While visiting the race track be sure to stop
in the Billy the Kid Casino and try your luck on the slots before you check out
the popular buffet. If that visit whets your gambling appetite, drive west
down the road on Highway 70 to Casino Apache to test your luck on poker,
blackjack, craps, roulette, and video slots.
A must is to hop in your car and drive the Billy the Kid National Scenic
Byway. This loop encircles most of Lincoln county, including the Hondo
Valley, historic Lincoln, and Capitan. Rich in history, Lincoln county has
been home to Billy the Kid, the Lincoln County wars, the Mescalero Apache tribe,
Kit Carson, "Black Jack" Pershing, Buffalo soldiers, and the ageless
Smokey the Bear. Sometime during your trip do not forget to visit Ft.
Stanton (about 7 miles from our house on NM 220) and the Hubbard Museum of the
American West in Ruidoso Downs.
Surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest, Ruidoso visitors have seemingly
endless choices for camping and hiking. The White Mountain Wilderness area
and the Capitan Wilderness area is nearby. Hiking trails can take you
through changing vistas of trees and wildlife. Perhaps you will see a mule
deer, a black bear, an eagle, or an elk. You might try your luck
fishing for trout at Bonito Lake, a short drive from our house.
After shopping and dining at the many choices in the area, check to see if
tickets are available for performances at the fabulous Spencer Theater.
This beautiful state-of-the-art performance hall, is graced by the work of glass
sculptor Dale Chihuly of Seattle. Just 1.5 miles from our house the theater is
host to Broadway shows, plays, dance troupes, orchestras, and music from all
over the world.
No visit to Ruidoso is complete without having a chuckwagon supper at the
Flying J Ranch and listening to old fashioned western music in the stage show
featuring the Flying J Wranglers. The Flying J is open May 23 through
September 1, with Saturday shows in September through mid-October. And ---
do not forget that the Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium has become a favorite to
more and more visitors each year. Attendees can listen to Western swing
music, shop, listen to cowboy poetry, learn tips and tricks from the best horse
experts around, and see authentic chuck wagons from the southwest. If you
act early enough, maybe you can score some tickets to eat a chuckwagon meal
prepared by one of the competitors in the chuckwagon contest. For two
years, the Food Network television channel has featured this popular festival.
